Scars can leave you feeling less than confident. Whether your scars come from acne, an injury, or other causes, most of us feel self-conscious about them. Makeup can cover them up but this is still sometimes less than satisfactory.
Fortunately, scars aren’t something you just have to learn to accept. Laser treatments are effective and much more accessible than you might have realized. Here at Everest Urgent Care, Dr. Xiaobin Li uses the PicoSureⓇ laser to treat your scars and help you feel more confident.
How lasers work to get rid of scars
The laser works by uses pulses of light to remove the top layer of your skin. This stimulates your skin to produce new skin cells, which makes scars less noticeable. Lasers also target blood vessels in the scar tissue to reduce redness.
PicoSure is a short-pulse laser that only removes surface layers of skin, which minimizes the risk of pain and damage from each round of treatment. Because the pulses are so short, there’s less heat, which makes it safer for your skin. The PicoSure laser is FDA-approved to treat acne scars.
What type of scars respond well to lasers?
Many types of scars respond well to laser treatment. These include the following:
- Acne scars
- Keloid scars
- Chicken pox scars
- Burn marks
- Injury scars
Although laser treatment can improve the appearance of many types of scars, you should be aware that it may not completely remove your scar.
What to expect from the procedure
Most patients tolerate the PicoSure laser treatments well, but if you’re concerned about the sensations, which feels like a rubber band lightly snapping your skin, we can use a topical anesthetic before treatment. During the treatment, the doctor will pass the laser over a very targeted area. The procedure takes from about 10-15 minutes, depending on the size of the area.
It may take several rounds of laser treatment to reduce the appearance of scars and other areas of skin damage. The number of treatments you need will depend on the type and depth of the scar, and Dr. Li will customize a treatment plan for you.
What should I expect from the recovery after laser treatment?
Most people find that their skin initially looks redder after laser treatment. Don’t be alarmed by the initial appearance of your skin after treatment; it will settle down within a few hours.
Immediately following the procedure, you may want to apply ice to your skin, which may be tender or sensitive right after each treatment. You should also avoid the sun as much as possible afterwards and use sunscreen with SPF 30 if you absolutely must be exposed to the sun.
