What Kind of Scar Do You Have? Can PicoSure Help?

Scar tissue is your body’s natural attempt to repair what’s been damaged. It’s a normal part of healing that takes patience and sometimes ends with a scar that damages your self-confidence.

With two convenient locations in Upper Darby and Havertown, Pennsylvania, our scar treatment specialists at Everest Urgent Care use the fast, nearly painless PicoSure® laser to treat patients dealing with this common problem. From acne to chickenpox scars and more, our experts are here to help you.

What kind of scar do I have?

There are a few different kinds of scars, and everyone has been affected by at least one of them.

Acne scars

Severe acne leaves scarring, causing embarrassment for a lot of people. These scars can look like deep pits in the skin, or they can look wavy or angular.

Contracture scars

Contracture scars are the scars you’re left with after a burn. Everyone you’ve ever met has likely burned themselves at least once. Sometimes a burn is bad enough that it leaves a tightened scar that can vary from minor to very deep, causing muscle and nerve damage.

Keloid scars

These scars are most common in those with darker skin. A keloid scar is usually the result of the body being overly aggressive in healing damaged skin. This is a scar that is raised off the body and is caused by anything from acne to a burn.

Hypertrophic scars

Hypertrophic scars are like keloid scars. They’re raised and red, but they don’t spread out the way keloid scars do.

What is PicoSure?

PicoSure is the gold standard when it comes to scar treatment. This new generation of lasers, called a picosecond laser, treats scars without creating additional damage. Instead of building up heat like laser procedures of the past, PicoSure turns laser energy into gentle pressure. This gentle pressure massages the injured cells, encouraging the growth of new collagen and elastin without further damaging your skin.

How does PicoSure work?

Collagen and elastin are your skin’s proteins. These two proteins plump up and smooth out your skin. Collagen makes up the most of your skin and is responsible for keeping wrinkles and fine lines at bay. Elastin is like elastic. It’s found in the collagen, and when elastin levels dip below a certain point, your skin begins to sag and wrinkle. PicoSure helps to increase production of both the elastin and the collagen your skin needs to reduce the appearance of a scar.

When you visit us at Everest Urgent Care for a PicoSure procedure, you can expect treatment to take 10-15 minutes. Your doctor applies a numbing cream to the scarred area and then gets to work with the laser. You can return home or go back to work immediately following the procedure.

If you have any kind of scarring, PicoSure can help. This state-of-the-art laser treatment revitalizes your skin, leaving behind brighter, healthier, younger-looking skin, with almost no downtime. Call us today to set up an appointment, or send us a message.
